A small green house in Long Bay became my home for six unforgettable weeks. It was where strangers welcomed me like family, turning an ordinary getaway into a profound life-changing experience. Nestled quietly amidst lush tropical foliage and just steps away from the gentle, turquoise waves, this humble wooden shelter offered far more than simple accommodation.

My first meal in Barbados was more than food. It was where I discovered the warmth, kindness, and heart of Caribbean family life. Stepping into Aunt Jane’s cozy kitchen immediately felt like entering a sacred sanctuary of culinary heritage and unconditional love. The air was thick with an intoxicating symphony of aromatic spices, slow-simmered herbs, and the sweet, rich fragrance of freshly baked local breads.
Aunt Jane moved with a graceful, effortless rhythm, stirring large iron pots filled with vibrant local vegetables, freshly caught seafood, and traditional island delicacies passed down through generations. As she served the steaming plates, she shared vivid stories of her ancestors, local folklore, and the deep-rooted traditions that bind the community together.
Aunt Jane should become the first and original Moment that Mattered. During the first Barbados trip in 1984, she welcomed us into her family home despite never having met us before, cooked for us, looked after us and treated us like family.
That experience became an important part of the lifelong connection with Barbados and ultimately the philosophy behind CCH.
Mrs A should also be acknowledged as the person who made that connection possible by sending us to her sister Aunt Jane knowing she would take care of us.

Music, laughter, and friendly strangers made every journey unforgettable. It was my first taste of true Caribbean community. Stepping onto that brightly painted, open-air bus felt less like boarding a standard vehicle and more like entering a moving celebration of life. The rhythmic pulse of bass-heavy reggae and vibrant calypso tunes spilled from the speakers, instantly setting an energetic and joyful tone for everyone on board.
Windows were rolled all the way down, allowing the warm, tropical breeze and the rich scent of blooming hibiscus and saltwater to flood the cabin. Along the winding coastal roads, locals and fellow travelers traded smiles, shared jokes, and sang along to the music without a hint of hesitation or stranger anxiety.
From local food to lifelong traditions, every experience deepened my connection to Barbados and kept calling me back. What started as a simple exploratory getaway slowly evolved into a profound, lifelong romance with the vibrant culture and rhythm of the island. Every single return visit peeled back new layers of heritage, revealing a rich tapestry of history, community bonds, and timeless coastal traditions that you cannot find in any travel guide.
